New PS4 titles submitted for certification after mid-July must also be PS5 compatible - report

Developers that submit a new PlayStation 4 game for certification after July 13 will need to make sure it is compatible with PlayStation 5, according to a report.

Sony wants all new titles submitted for certification after July 13 for PS4 to be compatible with PS5.

The news comes via a report on Eurogamer, which states developer documentation released on PlayStation's internal Partner website indicated developers must check an option for compatibility with PS5. This option was added at the end of April with a newer version of the PS4 devkit was made available.

Developers will be contacted with details on PS5 compatibility, in the order of the projects' release. A game will then be considered compatible if the code runs without issue on PS5 and provides the same features as the game on PS4.

The documentation also touches on existing game patches and remasters. This means that if a game was submitted before July 13, remasters and patches would not have to be compatible with PS5,  but Sony has "strongly recommended" it. However, if submitted after the cutoff, the remasters or patches would have to maintain compatibility.

As Eurogamer notes, this is just for games submitted after the cutoff date, not for games that have a release date already set for after July 13.

The report also goes on to state Sony exclusives The Last of Us: Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima will both be forward compatible with PS5.

Backward compatibility is one of PS5's features, and Sony previously said it believes the “overwhelming majority” of over 4,000 PS4 titles will be playable on PS5. The team at Sony also expects backwards compatible titles to run at a boosted frequency, and the game will feature higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions.
