NBA Live 20 has been cancelled

NBA Live 20, to no one's surprise, is not coming out.

NBA Live 20, which was never actually officially announced, has been cancelled. EA broke the news overnight alongside the reveal of its Q2 FY2020 earnings.

In July, EA announced NBA Live 20 had been delayed to sometime between October and December - instead of its usual September release window. At the time, the publisher said it's planning a different approach for this year's game, without really explaining what that means.

In last night's blog post announcing the cancellation, EA said it's "working on something new and meaningfully different" for the future of NBA Live. It sounds like when NBA Live returns, it will be a next-gen only game.

"New platforms are coming that will bring social connection, accessibility and player creativity to the fore. In a future of new possibilities, players shouldn’t be content with a game built for today’s realities and based on what we know to be possible, we feel we can go so much further with the new design," the post reads.

More details will be shared next year, so it's possible the next NBA Live will be a console launch title for PS5 and Scarlett - assuming, of course, EA doesn't want to give the new systems a bit of time to build an install base.

NBA Live 20 joins a growing list of NBA Live games that EA cancelled. Those being NBA Live 12 and NBA Live 13, not to mention the two mobile instalments NBA Live 11 and NBA Live Mobile.
