Mortal Kombat sells 3 million units worldwide

Warner's announced that its sold 3 million units of Mortal Kombat since it went on sale in June.

The publisher says the sales make it the highest-selling fighting game this year.

The fighting series was rebooted by Netherrealm Studios and Warner, who had taken over the IP after original owner Midway went bust back in 2009.

"NetherRealm Studios delivered a high quality game which has exceeded our sales goals. We'd like to thank our entire team and all of our partners for their innovative campaigns and tremendous support of Mortal Kombat, as the game sales continue to grow," said Warner Interactive boss Martin Tremblay.

Series creator and creative director Ed Boon added: "All of us at NetherRealm Studios are very excited that players have embraced Mortal Kombat. The game was a labor of love for us and we could not be more pleased with its performance. Fan reaction to this latest installment has made all of our hard work worth it."
