Here's your first look at Scorpion and Sub-Zero in the new Mortal Kombat film

Has the transition from game to film been a fatality?

We've finally had our first look at the upcoming Mortal Kombat film reboot.

Entertainment Weekly, has published a number of stills showing off what some beloved characters from the bloody brawler look like on the big screen this time around.

This includes Hanzo Hasashi aka Scorpion aka the Yellow Ninja, who is being played by Logan star Hiroyuki Sanada, as well as Joe Taslim's portrayal of Bi-Han aka Sub-Zero - well, one of the Sub-Zeroes - aka the Blue Ninja.

The film apparently kicks off with a flashback to feudal Japan starring Scorpion and Sub-Zero. We also had a good look at Mehcad Brooks's Major Jackson "Jax" Briggs, Sonya Blade - played by Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson's portrayal of Kano. That's on top of the new character Cole Young, who has not appeared in the games before. He's being played by Lewis Tan.

In an interview, director Simon McQuoid joked to EW that the film is "definitely not" going to be rated PG-13, likely a reference to the fact that Mortal Kombat is a bloody-as-hell series and the film is targeting an R rating.

"Out of context this quote might seem incendiary, it's not: The rules around ratings aren't what a lot of people think they are," McQuoid said.

"It's amount of blood, it's amount of red, it's interpretation of how you go about it. We had a lot of discussions about getting the balance right so there was gore and there was blood and there were fatalities." He pauses to repeat what he just said. "And there is gore, blood, and fatalities."

The Mortal Kombat reboot is set to launch on April 16 and will be debuting on Warner Bros' HBO Max streaming service on the same day.

This news came just weeks after producer Todd Garner said that the film had been delayed indefinitely.
