Mortal Kombat creator would like to see more adaptations

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has said he'd like to see more cross-media adaptations of the gory fighter.

"I'd love it if this was the first of a number of things that we can do with Kevin and Warner Brothers in terms of bringing Mortal Kombat to other media," Boon told Joystiq, speaking of the Mortal Kombat: Legacy series.

"Whether it's live-action shorts like this, another feature film would be great, and of course future video games as well," he added.

Speaking of the Rebirth clip that eventually led to Legacy, Boon said he'd liked director Kevin Tancharoen's take on the characters.

"I was sent the link like everybody else was, and had the same kind of reaction: blown away and wondering who made this," he said.

"To me, it was great because it was a contemporary take on it. It wasn't dated in the '90s and all that. It had this kind of very distinct dark style to it that hadn't been presented before.

Everybody would always say, in the previous Mortal Kombat movies, 'I want to see one that's darker like the games,' and I think he delivered that and it resonated with a lot of people."

Tancheroen created the Rebirth trailer as a private project, but a leak sent the short film viral, resulting in a nine-episode deal with Warner Bros. to promote the upcoming game.

Mortal Kombat releases on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next week.
