Mortal Kombat 11 is the best-selling game on all platforms in April - NPD

Mortal Kombat 11 dominated the charts of every single platform it came out on.

April was a somewhat quiet month for video game release, and the latest NPD report reflects that. Though the industry overall saw a 1% growth in spending, much of that was the result of strong software and accessories/game cards performance.

The industry generated $842 million in spending during April across software, hardware, as well as accessories and game cards.

Hardware continues to decline. During April, hardware spending fell 29% compared to the same period last year, down to $160 million. Nintendo Switch, on the other hand, continues to carry the segment, posting growth compared to the declining PS4, and Xbox One.

The Switch, unsurprisingly, was the best-selling platform in April, and continues to be the leader so far this year in both unit and dollar sales. In fact, the Switch's 32GB neon red and blue Joy-Con model is the single best-selling hardware item this year so far.

Software sales rose a decent 15% during the period, bringing in $427 million. Mortal Kombat 11 was the biggest game release in April, so it stands to reason that it dominates the charts.

NetherRealm's fighter was the best-selling game on all four platforms (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch), and is now the second best-selling game this entire year. The report notes that Mortal Kombat 11 is the first time a third-party Switch game topped the platform's sales since Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle back in September, 2017.

PS4 exclusive Days Gone also fared well, coming in at number two. Compared to other Sony exclusives, Days Gone ranks at number seven. It's obviously - unsurprisingly - developer Sony Bend's best-selling game by revenue.
