Microtransactions may or may not return to Star Wars: Battlefront 2, says EA

As EA continues to tune progression in Star Wars: Battlefront 2, the company has said that microtransactions may not return.

At the launch of Star Wars: Battlefront 2, following wide fan outcry, EA temporarily remove the option to purchase Crystals - the game's paid-for currency - in order to retweak the progression systems and make them more rewarding.

In the days since, the game received a couple of updates. The most of recent of which upped the credit rewards and crafting parts earned after every match, and increased the Credits cap players can earn per day in Arcade Mode. It's a step in the right direction, but it's still too little for many players.

It sounds like things will continue to evolve, as EA CFO Blake Jorgensen pointed out during the 37th NASDAQ Investor Conference this week.

"Clearly we are very focused on listening to the consumer and understanding what the consumer wants and that's evolving constantly," Jorgensen said, via Glixel.

"But we're working on improving the progression system. We turned the MTX off as an opportunity to work on the progression system inside the game. We're continuing to do that. I think there's an update this week and again next week."

Interestingly, Jorgensen added that it's still up in the air whether or not microtransactions will make a return, and if they do, they could be implemented differently.

"Overtime, we'll address how we will want to bring the MTX either into the game or not and what form we will decide to bring it into," he added.

Clearly, microtransactions in online games is a big business for EA. During the same conference, the CFO said that about 35% of players spend money on Ultimate Team modes in EA Sports games. That said, the Battlefront 2 community is on edge right now and bringing back microtransactions so quickly may lead to even more bad press.
