Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg thinks that this is the final proper console generation

Aaron Greenberg, head of Xbox Game Marketing, has spoken candidly about his thoughts on the future of gaming consoles.

Speaking with Engadget, Greenberg spoke about the upcoming Project Scorpio, a new Xbox iteration that has, so far, enjoyed a confused marketing message.

Greenberg's new statements don't necessarily clarify anything specific, but they give some indication of Microsoft's current philosophy.

"For us, we think the future is without console generations", he told Engadget. "We think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware -- we're making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio."

"We're basically saying, 'This isn't a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.' We think of this as a family of devices."

He notes that there "appears to be a lot of demand and interest around Project Scorpio", and that they're expecting big sales when it launches (which will, apparently, happen next year).

The Scorpio follows the Xbox One S, the latest version of the Xbox One, which allows for 4K output.

Whether or not Microsoft's plans going forward will soon become clearer, or whether console players will be willing to purchase new systems more frequently, remains to be seen.
