New Metal Gear Survive gameplay shows base-building, crafting, and slip-n-slide zombies

Metal Gear Survive has a new gameplay trailer, showing off how crafting and base-building work in Konami’s first Metal Gear game since the high-profile departure of series creator Hideo Kojima in 2015.

Released via IGN, the video starts with a bit of story before moving on to some classic third-person sneaking.

We then get a look a how resources are gathered - complete with some ubiquitous survival game tree-whacking - as well as a few examples of weapon and fortification crafting.

It all looks very Dead Rising, especially the giant hammers and flaming clubs.

The trailer then ends with reminder that you can test things out for yourself when a beta for Metal Gear Survive runs between 18-21 January, 2018 before the game releases on February 20 in the US and February 22 in Europe.

Metal Gear Survive reuses the Afghanistan map from Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, and won’t be a full-priced release, costing $40 and £35 in the US and UK respectively.

Despite the fast turnaround since his departure, Kojima hasn’t been involved with Metal Gear Survive at any stage, and from the sound of it, he isn’t totally sold on the idea either.

“I’m not involved at all, and I don’t know anything about it,” Kojima said at Tokyo Game Show in 2016.

“Personally speaking, Metal Gear Solid is espionage to me, political fiction. I don’t think zombies would appear in such a world.”
