MGS 5: The Phantom Pain doesn't allow free roam during missions

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain has an open world, which you can wander about as much as you like - as long as you're not on a mission.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima shared a few details on how The Phantom Pain works during the most recent episode of his podcast.

According to Metal Gear Informer's report, players will be able to go anywhere they like in the world.

Once they accept a mission, however, things change: missions take place within a set area, and if the player leaves that area they will fail the mission. They may also fail if they procrastinate too much.

Missions are accepted while free roaming, rather than from a menu system. While free-roaming, you can do side quests and other activities.

MGS 5: The Phantom Pain is coming to PC, PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in the first quarter of 2015.
