Metal Gear Rising developers "clash all the time"

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a joint production by Kojima Productions and Platinum Games, and the two companies don't always see eye to eye.

Speaking to EDGE, Kojipro's Yuji Korekado said both companies are very independent and don't play well with others.

"Platinum Games is a studio that's very similar to Kojima Productions in that they have a very specific belief towards their game creating,"he said.

"They have things that they don't want to change, that they really believe in. At Kojima Productions we have the same strong feelings toward creating a better game.

"But because we are similar, when there are things that we want changed, we clash all the time. We always clash. We have to discuss."

Korekado gave a couple of examples. Kojipro's Etsu Tamari is the game's writer, and fought like cats in a sack with Platinum's Kenji Saito, the director. Korekado locaked the pair in a room for three days until they forged the bonds of broship. Meanwhile, both whole companies were at drawn daggers over when the game should be set, with KojiPro nominating a window between MGS2 and MGS4, and Platinum pushing for an alternate timeline.

"In the end, the motivation of both studios is to make a better product. When we collide, we can usually see what is good and what is bad in each other's ideas. And it helps us make something better," Korekado said, showing the kind of diplomacy usually noted in Nobel Prize winners.

"So as the creative producer, I think we have a lot of problems, but all these problems have given us the right direction to follow."

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance arrives on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2013. It famously kicked off as a Kojipro game based on how much fun it is to slice absolutely everything up before the team realised they had no clue how to make that work in a stealth game and handed it over to the action experts at Platinum.
