Rob Gronkowski is the Madden 17 cover athlete - first look trailer

EA Sports named Rob Gronkowski as the cover athlete for Madden NFL 17 during ESPN's SportsCenter last night.

According to our friend Mr Google, Gronkowski has been a member of the New England Patriots for the entirety of his six year NFL career. During this relatively short period he has chalked up some remarkable achievements (apparently) 65 regular season touchdowns, which is pretty close to being a record, and four Pro Bowl honours.

Dear beloved EA boss Peter Moore seems every excited about this because Gronk, as he is (apparently) affectionally known, is the first Patriot to grace the cover in many years. He's also the first tight end to feature on a Madden cover. Let us respect our American friends by not making any jokes about that, and instead move smartly on while coughing a little and remembering that European and Australian football codes are equally baffling to other nations.

Gronkowski tweeted that it's an honour to be chosen.

Madden 17 releases in August for PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Check out the first look trailer below.
