MachineGames says super-fast SSDs in next-gen consoles are key to the player experience

MachineGames is rather excited over really fast storage in the upcoming consoles.

While folks have always been able to buy fast storage for PC, having super-fast SSDs in the upcoming consoles is key to the player experience, according to Wolfenstein developer MachineGames.

Speaking in an interview on the Bethesda website, chief technology officer Jim Kjellin said this helps the team change how it thinks about game design.

"The historical issue of having to wait for loading to finish or artificially slowing the pacing before you can do major changes to the player experience will be a thing of the past," he said.

"With these super-fast SSDs, we don't need to consider ways of entertaining the gamer while the levels load any longer," added production director John Jennings.

"This allows for bigger worlds and letting players jump around seamlessly within them are going to provide some exciting new experiences. I'm really looking forwards to that."

As for what's in store for the studio now that Bethesda has been acquired by Microsoft: "games, games, and more games."

"I also think being part of Microsoft will help us make even greater games in the future," said gameplay director Fredrik Ljungdahl.

"They have a huge number of knowledgeable people, great developers, tech solutions, and hardware."

MachineGames is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a sale on its games.

Xbox Live Gold members can pick up Wolfenstein: The Two-Pack for 50% off, Wolfenstein: The New Order for 50% off, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus for 50% off, and more. And PS4 owners can pick up Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus for 50% off.

Nintendo Switch owners have until tomorrow, October 17 to get 50% off Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Wolfenstein: Youngblood Deluxe Edition.
