Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy release date, plot detailed

Final Fantasy 13's hero Lightning is back in a brand new game launching next year. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy's plot and release window have been discussed by Square-Enix in some detail.

Launching on PS3 and Xbox 360 at some point in 2013, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy is set 300 years after the events of FF13-2. Lightning awakens to find that the world is only 13 days away from destruction, and must set out to stop the cataclysm.

Humanity's remaining time is tracked by the Doomsday Clock, which continually counts down to the games ending - presumably not in real-time, but triggered by the plot. Lightning can rewind the clock by progressing to the story, giving the world more time.

Combat has also been discussed, blending both real-time and turn-based systems, along with more character customisation - just perfect for a raft of paid costume DLC no doubt.
