Kinect Sports Rivals tech can be used in other games, says Rare

Kinect Sports Rivals developer Rare has discussed the nature of its character creation tech, which uses the sensor's camera to pull in and adapt your likeness. Studio head Craig Duncan has suggested that the tool could be implemented into future games.

Speaking with OXM, Duncan said, "It's always great that we have core bits of technology that extend beyond the game. We have a number of things - the world looks beautiful, the art team have done an amazing job, as have the rendering team and everybody who enables that - so I think it's an incredible-looking game and that's something we can build into other games.

"And even things like our Champion creation system, that could absolutely live in a different type of game as well. We always look at that. It's not so much about what can we take, but what can we build on to ensure that the next game that comes out of Rare has something new and different that people didn't expect, that challenges what we can do in gaming again."

The use of facial capture on Xbox One is a new concept that could happily exist within other titles, but it's not clear what other applications it could have down the line. That said; Duncan added that Rare is poised and happy to share its knowledge of the tech with other first and third-party developers.

"We always work very closely with the platform team," he added, "so whenever we do things that improve maybe the way skeleton tracking work, that gets fed back into SDKs that ultimately then go out to other developers. So that process happens organically.

"Very very occasionally we'll get a call, and they'll say hey - I won't go into details, but - '"hey, we've got a developer that's trying to do something with X using Kinect, would you mind hooking them up with a couple of your guys?" And we always do that, because it's great for the Xbox platform, it's great for everyone, and we like collaborating with other teams as well."
