John Romero regrets Daikatana ad campaign, thinks a reunion with Carmack would be "awesome"

Remember when John Romero tried to make you his b***h?

Yeah. He's really sorry about that.

Speaking with Gamesauce magazine (via IndustryGamers), the Doom co-creator finally delivered the conclusion to the greatest cautionary tale in videogame ad history.

“I knew it was risky, and I didn’t want to do it. It didn’t make sense. I mean, there’s the whole culture of smack talk that goes with games and especially the FPS’s, and that was something I was known for,” Romero explained.

“You know, I never wanted to make you my b***h, not you, not them, not any of the other players and, mosy importantly, not any of my fans. Up until that ad, I felt I had a great relationship with the gamer and the game development community and that ad changed everything... I regret it and I apologize for it.”

Of course, we can't talk Romero's storied past without mentioning id Software's resident brainiac John Carmack. And Romero, for one, thinks that if the two ever cross paths again, it'll be the best thing since sliced bread because they'll go together like chocolate and peanut butter even though they've aged like a fine wine. (Hungry, much? -Ed.)

"I have no doubt that if John and I decided to make another game it would be fresh and new and awesome. We’ve both grown a lot in the past 14 years and have a lot more experience, not only in game development but also in dealing with people and game teams,”  Romero said.

“Many times you hear of musical groups getting back together after decades apart, and then they try to work together again everything explodes and falls apart because of personality and hubris. I really don’t think that would happen with John and me.”

Romero's currently employed as Creative Director at Gazillion, while Carmack continues to be id Software's Executive VP of Giving 40-Year-Long Talks at QuakeCon. Maybe the two could get together again in the future, but that's a big maybe.
