John Needham passes Cryptic CEO torch to Jack Emmert

Atari has announced Jack Emmert is to replace former Cryptic CEO John Needham at the head of the Champions Online and Star Trek Online developer.

Games Industry reports Needham's destination is unknown, but he is said to be pursuing other opportunities within the games sphere.

"It's been a privilege and a pleasure to work with Cryptic these past several years," he said. "It's with a heavy heart that I now depart this company we've all worked so tirelessly to grow.

"We've done so very much together – two successful MMO launches, The Foundry and a successful free-to-play transition for Champions Online. I'm thankful for my time here and for all that we've accomplished."

New helmsman Emmert has been on board the Cryptic ship since launch, having formerly written pen-and-paper RPGs.

"As a colleague, I am sad to see John go, but our vision remains clear," he said.

Cryptic echoed these sentiments in a press statement.

"Cryptic Studios would like to wish John Needham the best of luck in all his endeavors. John served Cryptic admirably and will be missed."

Emmert has already commenced his duties, reporting directly to Atari CEO Jim Wilson.
