Iwata promises to avoid Wii-style "gap in software" with 3DS

Speaking to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has lamented Wii's loss of "momentum" due to patchy software releases, and has promised to avoid a repeat of the situation with 3DS.

"It's important that you be able to supply software with no pause," said Iwata. "With the DS and Wii, following the titles that were released at launch, the momentum dropped when there was a gap in software releases. We're making plans so that this type of thing won't happen."

Iwata was speaking after Nintendo World 2011, large-scale 3DS showcase, in Japan this weekend.

He also confirmed in the interview that Wii had sold 2 million units over the holiday season.

Wii sold 1,592,563 units in Japan in 2010.

The event saw the launch line-up for 3DS confirmed for Japan. Launch dates and detailed for the US and Europe are expected to be announced at junkets in Amsterdam and New York on January 19.

3DS will launch on February 26.
