Injustice: Gods Among Us - arena choice is just as important as character choice, says Boon

Injustice: Gods Among Us arena choices will be just as important as choosing a character in the game, according to Ed Boon.

Speaking at the EB Expo in Sydney, Boon said chosen arenas are important in when battling other characters, instead of just being a static background. In Injustice, players can interact with the arena's background as it contains unique elements characters can take advantage of.

Character and arena interaction was shown in a demo featuring Superman against Nightwing, each with opposite fighting techniques: Superman uses strength and brute force; Nightwing uses gadgets.

"So throughout the arena you'll see objects scattered everywhere – they're not just pretty visuals, they have a function in gameplay," Boon said. "So if there is a car in the arena and Nightwing has been cornered, he can jump onto the car and use it as a bounce pad to jump to the other side of the arena.

"Superman, being a power character, can pick up the car and just slam it.

Some arenas will also have multiple levels - up to three, the Bat Cave has the Batmobile which can launch rockets, etc, and arenas can also be damaged, which can also come into play when battling another character. Basically, arenas are responsive environments

"Our goal was to do something with the gameplay that is a dramatic departure from the existing stuff," Boon said. "We just wanted to celebrate the super hero experience."

Injustice: Gods Among Us is slated for an April 2013 release on PS3, Wii U and Xbox 360.
