Indie dev puts his best Word Forward

It might not seem like much more can be done with the use-a-letter-grid-to-make-words format, but a sole Irish indie developer's new take on it is topping the app store word game category around the world.

Shane McCafferty's Word Forward was released last week, and has reached the No. 1 spot in 12 countries, including the UK and US. The game is published by AppyNation and is free-to-play.

Word Forward tasks players with finding words in a 5x5 grid by connecting adjacent letters, to make them disappear and build up your score. Sounds simple enough, but the goal is to clear as much of the grid as possible, meaning you need to pay attention to the letters you leave behind just as much as the ones you clear.

Word Forward is available now on iOS.

Thanks, MCV.
