How We Soar is a PlayStation VR about flying on a phoenix

Forget life-saving medical robots and liberating design tools: VR is all about letting us do the kind of things out little hearts yearn for but which are impossible or incredibly unlikely.

The team of Crytek and Free Radical veterans at new developer Penny Black Studios clearly get this. The Midlands crew's debut title is called How We Soar, and has you taking the reins of a phoenix to explore the skies.

The PlayStation VR title launches later this year, and gives players full control of their flight path; it's not on-rails. As you explore the papercraft-style world, your presence will affect nearby structures, bringing colour to surfaces and reshaping them. Travelling between a realistic setting and a fantasy realm, players will unlock memories in the mid of a character called The Author.

"Have you ever wondered how Harry Potter felt when he first rode a hippogriff in the Prisoner of Azkaban?" managing director Tom Turner wrote on the PlayStation Blog.

"Or what it was like for Bastian to fly on Falkor the Luckdragon in The Never Ending Story? Well this is exactly the experience we want to give you when you first enter the world that we’ve created."
