How to Pull Off Excellent Throws in Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee

Throwing a Poke Ball in Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee is no easy business. You're going to want to get the timing of your throw just right, to give yourself the best chance of catching a creature. In our Pokemon Let's Go throwing guide, we'll be walking you through how to make excellent throws in Pokemon Let's Go with as little trouble as possible.

How to Make an Excellent Throw in Pokemon Let’s Go

If you’ve played Pokemon Go, then you’ll be no stranger to how the catching mechanic works in Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. Whenever you find yourself facing off against a Pokemon out in the wild, you’ll see a white outer circle around the Pokemon. Within this will be another circle, colored either orange or yellow, which will be continually decreasing.

The aim of the game here is to time your throw so that your Poke Ball reaches the Pokemon when the shrinking colored circle is as small as possible. The smaller the circle, the more chance you’ll have of obtaining a high ranking throw, like a ‘great’ or ‘excellent’ throw, which increases your chances of capturing the wild Pokemon.

But then there’s aiming to take into consideration. It all depends on which controller you’re using to play Pokemon Let’s Go. If you’re using a single joy-con, detached from your Nintendo Switch, then you’ll need to swing your aim to throw the Poke Ball. Don’t put too much force behind the swing, as it’ll sail way over the head of the Pokemon, and try to bring your arm down gently to throw the ball.

If instead you’re playing Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu or Let’s Go Eevee in handheld mode, you’ll have gyroscopic controls to contend with. Whenever the Pokemon moves around the screen (which they sometimes will), you’ll have to move your Nintendo Switch to align with the Pokemon, before you can throw the Poke Ball. It takes some practice to get used to, and remember to aim the middle of your screen near the top of the Pokemon, as the ball will angle slightly downward when thrown.
