The Homeworld series was set in space, but Deserts of Kharak take place on a planet's surface. What's up with that?
A new Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak developer diary has been released in which Blackbird Interactive examples how the new entry fits in with the rest of the series: it's a prequel, diving into a backstory given only a cursory nod in the original game.
It's great to see Gearbox and Blackbird talking more openly about the RTS as we count down to its January 20 release date, as the silence has been a bit worrying for fans.
I've also seen some chatter about whether or not Deserts of Kharak is a "real" Homeworld game. As you probably recall, the project began as a spiritual sequel (or prequel) to the Homeworld series titled Hardware: Shipbreakers, put together by a team of former Relic staffers who didn't have the rights to the much-loved property.
