Harvest Moon: One World tool upgrades | How to upgrade your hoe, watering can, and other tools

Harvest Moon: One World is the newest title in the fantasy farming simulator franchise. (Not to be confused with Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town, the other new game in the original Harvest Moon series that's due out later this month.)

Boasting the biggest world in any Harvest Moon game to date, One World nevertheless sticks close to the fundamentals. That means you're going to be crafting and upgrading your own tools.

On this page:

List of tools in Harvest Moon: One World

In order to upgrade your tools, you'll first need to craft the basic model.

There are five types of tools in the game:

  • Hoe: For tilling land.
  • Watering can: For watering plants.
  • Hammer: For breaking boulders.
  • Axe: For chopping wood.
  • Fishing rod: For catching fish.

Receiving a request for a type of resource you don't yet have is a good indicator that a new tool or upgrade has become available.

How to upgrade tools in Harvest Moon: One World

Before you can begin upgrading any of your tools, you'll need to progress through a few story beats. First, you need to make a workbench when Doc Jr asks you to. This request should come after you've finished the story sections in Halo Halo.

Once you've built a workbench, return to the mine east of Callison. You've probably already been here by this point in the story, since it's where you found the bronze you needed to build the workbench in the first place. You may already have encountered the NPC there named Dva. However, in order to begin upgrading tools, you need to speak to him again.

It might take a couple of in-game days and multiple conversations with him, but eventually Dva will give you a request called Updating Your Farm Tools 1. This takes five bronze, which you can once again find in the nearby mines and refine at Doc Jr's workshop.

Dva will reward you with the DIY recipes for the Expert Hoe and Expert Watering Can. These upgrades require four bronze each to perform. In both cases, the tool's area of effect is increased to 1x3.

Later in the game (after you've completed the story sections in Pastilla and have the Medallion of Wood), return to Dva for a new request: Updating Your Farm Tools 2. This time, Dva wants five silver in exchange for the recipes. The mine in Lebkuchen is a good place to start looking.

Refine the silver and bring it to Dva in exchange for the recipes for Expert Hammer, Expert Axe, and Expert Fishing Rod.

Like the first set of upgrades, these cost four bronze each. The hammer and axe upgrades allow you to harvest materials from tougher sources, while the fishing rod upgrade makes fishing slightly easier.

Upgrading tools to higher levels

The Interior Design & Tool Upgrade Pack (one of several pieces of Day One DLC available for Harvest Moon: One World) adds an additional upgrade level for all tools.

Buying the pack is currently the only way to get your tools to a higher level than expert.
