Hardware: Online Arena sequel randomly pops up 13 years later

One of the earliest PlayStation Network compatible titles is getting a sequel.

Hardware: Rivals is a vehicle combat game based on 2002 PS2 release Hardware: Online Arena, which was one of the first online multiplayer experiences for PlayStation.

The project is being developed by a new internal Sony team called SCE Connected Content Group, and some of the staff worked on the original.

Described on the PlayStation Blog as "a new coat of paint on an old friend", Hardware: Rivals includes "a truckload of upgrades and new features, but the spirit of the original gameplay remains the same". It boasts multiple maps and game modes as well as challenges and special events, and supports both team and solo competitive play. There are multiple vehicle classes to choose from, and vehicles can be customised both cosmetically and with unlockable upgrades.

No word yet on launch date, but expect it digitally only. Here's a trailer:
