Hard West launch trailer makes it look like more than a cowboy XCOM

Hard West is a tactical game set in the old American west. Why am I already so invested in its plot?
I really enjoyed what I played of XCOM, but I couldn't tell you the story of it if my life depended on it. Aliens ... attack? Shadowy para-military organisation ... might not be all good?? Look, I'm sure there was something there but I was way too busy exploding alien heads to notice it.
Genre-buddy Hard West seems to be brimming with character and narrative, just judging by its launch trailer. I already remember more about its plot.
