Greene: Our Plan is to “Sort of Remake” PUBG's Erangel Map

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Creative Director wants the map to have the identity of a Russian or Crimean island.

As it stands now, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds only has one map in the early-access to host its deadly game of Battle Royale. It's called Erangel and it's a geographical anomaly, stitching together disparate zones for its war game. When the full game comes around, there will be two more maps, both more realistic. However, Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene recently told USgamer in an interview that a remake of Erangel is in the cards.

"I agree. There's a volcanic rock in the middle of fields and stuff, which really shouldn't be there," said Greene when asked about the disjointed nature of Erangel which currently includes multiple geographic zones and installations. "[I]t's our plan in maybe a ear's time to go back to Erangel and sort of remake the map and give it that identity of this kind of Russian or Crimean island, I should say."

It's not clear how extensive the remake will be from Greene's comments, only that Bluehole is planning some kind of overhaul of the famous Early-Access map which has seen the countless deaths of so many players. However, Greene revealed that the team has some additional level designers working on the game, one who's worked on Call of Duty, and a lead terrain artist that "loves that realism and spends hours reading books on the trees of regions," so if Erangel is remade in the mold of the new maps, it will probably look very different and far more natural.

It makes sense that Erangel would be remade. As it stands, it serves as a fantastic and wildly varied terrain to host Battlegrounds' games. But Greene is a reported fan of military realism and so a more realistic take on Erangel is probably something the team is passionate about.

You can read more from our interview with Greene here. If you haven't checked out Battlegrounds already, then it's safe to say that Battlegrounds is one of the biggest games of the year. Battlegrounds blasted past 5 million sales in only 4 months, and is one of the highest played games on Steam.

Inspired by the Japanese film, Battle Royale, PUBG as it's known drops 100 players on Erangel as they battle it out to be last person standing. Along the way, a circular zone begins appearing, which will hurt players not in the circle when the counter runs down. As the map gets smaller and smaller, the game becomes more and more stressful until you either make it to the end, or lose your head in the fray.
