Gearbox: Borderlands' success attributed to catering to "the current gamer"

Gearbox president Randy Pitchford has said that Borderlands "can be a lesson" to all developers when making a videogame, as the title's success can be attributed to catering to "the current gamer".

"Perhaps Borderlands can be a lesson for all of us -- that when making a videogame, we should not be afraid to identify gamers as the audience," Pitchford told IGN (via Joystiq). "I wonder if too frequently publishers and developers are so caught up with going after new, untapped audiences that they can forget to care for the largest, most loyal and reliable audience there is -- the current gamer.

Gearbox plans to add more content to Borderlands soon, and it includes a level cap increase. There’s no word on how much DLC the original game’s going to eventually get, but there's more coming.

"We are investing a lot of time in supporting the game with free updates and paid downloadable content," he added. "There will be some announcements on both fronts soon, I expect,. We have a lot of motivation to do more with the game and have a lot of lessons we're applying not only to our immediate efforts, but to our ambitions for the future.

"I don't have anything specifics to announce at this time, though."

Last year, Gearbox creative director Mikey Neumann told VG247 that a sequel to the shooter would be "a no-brainer", so there's always that too.
