GameStop estimates US console installed base at 56.8 million

GameStop has estimated that the total installed base for consoles and handhelds in the US sits at around 220 million units, when you include last-gen hardware, which means over two-thirds of the 307 million population owns a gaming system.

Using NPD figures as a reference, the retailer reports that estimated the domestic installed base is at 112 million for current-gen devices with DS and Wii being the top platforms.

GameStop revealed in it's annual earnings report today that approximately one quarter of its non-used business for the year came from Nintendo and the installed base of handhelds and consoles.

The company also believes that the 220 million gaming handhelds and consoles have been purchased in the US as of December 2009, with 112 million being current generation.

Here is GameStop's estimated installed base figures in units:

  • Total consoles & handhelds: 220 million
  • Current-generation consoles and handhelds: 112 million
  • DS: 38.6 million
  • Wii: 27.1 million
  • Xbox 360: 18.6 million
  • PSP: 16.8 million
  • PS3: 11.1 million

Wii has sold nearly 10 million more units domestically than the Xbox 360 despite being released a year later, according to GameStop.

That's a lot of consoles and handhelds.
