GameStop closing 250 stores in 2013

GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd has confirmed that the gaming retail chain will shutter 250 stores this year in a bid to streamline the business. However, it will also open some new sites in a bid to improve its business.

GI.biz reports that Lloyd made the announcement at the recent Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference.

He confirmed that 250 unprofitable GameStop stores or those close to better-performing stores would close in 2013.

However he added that the brand also plans to open 70 new stores and acquire 40 new sites in France from flagging UK retailer GAME throughout the year. Only 50 of the stores facing closure will be outside the U.S.

Said Lloyd, "We've been successful at that for two years and we will continue to do that program in 2013."
