Games Now! The best iPhone and iPad games for Friday, September 25th

It’s the week after a major iOS update yet plenty of new games arrived amid the thousands of app updates. Here are the best games for your iPhone and iPad this week along with a classic you may have missed.

The best PAID iOS games this week

The Sequence: $0.99 (iPad, iPhone)

This one is a gem. The Sequence has been out on Android for a while now and finally we have an iOS version. The Sequence is a unique, electronically minded, puzzle game. Success involves moving nodes from a starting grid position to the goal gird position. Nodes can be moved by placing modules, each with their own abilities, on the board. It starts simple becomes gradually more advanced as one progresses.

Super Happy Fun Block: $2.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Super Happy Fun Block is a fun puzzle platformer with a clever colour changing dynamic. Changing the colour of the world alters reality. Platforms that are blue disappear when you change the world to blue, you can pass through red platforms when your character is red, and so on. It looks unique, the animation is fun, and the puzzles are clever. Definitely one for platform and puzzle fans.

Cavernaut: $0.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Cavernaut involves avoiding hazards and escaping in your spaceship from a maze of caves on an alien planet. Using Gravity Crash style trusting controls you navigate your way through a series of randomly generated caves to an exit. There’s crystals to collect along the way to trade for ship upgrades and more. It’s excellently put together and controls well. Worth a play.

The best FREE iOS games this week

Sketch Breaker (iPad, iPhone)

Sketch Breaker is a colourful breakout type game with a twist. The game plays out on art canvases, the blocks are replaced with splashes of coloured paint, and your bat appears where you draw. The aim of each stage is to clean up the canvas by removing all the paint splashes. It starts simple and adds complexity over time until you’re frantically swiping to reposition your bat. Nice pleasant splashy fun.

Mucho Taco (iPad, iPhone)

Mucho Taco is a fun idle clicker, well a flicker actually, where you make as many tacos as your fingers allow. Collect different flavours, salsas, and even pinatas. Build and manage taco restaurants and grow your taco empire. Sounds daft doesn’t? It is, but it’s good, funny, colourful, and well put together. Fancy a taco? I do now.

Blocky Highway (iPad, iPhone)

Another blocky game! Don’t run away, this one isn’t a Crossy Road clone. The only thing borrowed from Crossy Road is the blocky look and it works well here. Gameplay in Blocky Highway involves racing traffic, avoiding trains, and collecting cars. OK! It is quite similar to Crossy Road but there’s a fair amount of voxel based bang for your buck here. A fun one to dip into for minutes at a time.

This week’s golden oldie that’s still fantastic

Orbital: $2.99 (iPad, iPhone)

Orbital was described best, by Eli Hodapp from TouchArcade, as combining ‘the addictive gameplay of Peggle and the beauty of Geometry Wars, two digital forms of crack, into one easy to use package’. Orbital is still as great a puzzle game now as it was when it released way back in 2009. Gameplay involves firing circular orbs into the walled game area. When orbs touch they count down to their eventual destruction. Destroying orbs awards points and frees up space for more. Orbital is a simple, well executed, clever puzzler, which is perfectly suited to mobile. Timeless.
