Fortnite's "Survive the Storm" update crafts a new gameplay mode

Fortnite's first content update offers a new gameplay mode for a limited time.

Fortnite is a new release with genuine potential, but also carries the drawbacks of other Early Access titles. The good news is Epic Games is already rolling out new content with a hefty update called "Survive the Storm", introducing new weapons, heroes, and a brand-new zombie survival mode.

Once the new gameplay mode is live, your heroes may explore the map and assemble defenses to your hearts content - during daylight hours. Once night arrives, the husks will start spawning and rush your defenses. Your job is to craft enough defenses and ammunition to make it to sunrise, unlocking new rewards in the process.

It's a fairly traditional survival mode - Minecraft basically did the same thing - but should prove a fine addition to Fortnite's existing gameplay. The only downside is that Epic Games is promoting "Survive the Storm" as a limited-time event, so at some point the mode and its rewards will disappear. On the bright side, that probably means Epic Games will roll out other unique events in the near future.

Fortnite is currently available in Early Access for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The new update launches on August 29, 2017.
