Fortnite v6.10 patch introduced in-game tournaments - here's how they work

For the competitive among us, today's Fortnite patch brought with it more than the Quadcrasher vehicle.

Patch v6.10, which went live earlier this morning, added Fortnite's first iteration of in-game tournaments, which can be found under the new Events section.

Tournaments are timed events, available only at certain dates and times. The goal is to earn as many points as possible, which are awarded by eliminating players and getting high placements in matches. There's also a score target for each tournament, and reaching it will award players with a pin. Pins are also used to progress to the next round of the tournament when those get added.

All players start each tournament fresh, however, so scores do not carry over. During the tournament, the game's matchmaking will try to get you into games with players of a similar point count, meaning the better you do the more experienced opponents you'll be matched against.

There's one major caveat, however. All players will need to have opted in for crossplay. Fortnite players from all platforms will compete against one another, regardless of the input method used. This means controller players will be going against mouse and keyboard and so on.

This also goes for touch controls on mobile. The reason for Epic's decision to allow everyone to play together is that the developer saw top controller players in public tournaments such as Fall Skirmish perform just as well as mouse and keyboard players, and were even able to compete with them.

"Combining everyone into a single competition will allow for players to compete with their friends regardless of platforms and will allow us to place a single shining spotlight onto the world’s best players, increasing prize pools and player exposure from our competitions," explained Epic.

This does not mean Epic is against the idea of offering separate tournaments for each control method in the future, but that's how this initial rollout is going to look like.

The first tournament is available starting today, and you can see the full schedule below:
