69% of Fortnite players polled have spent real-money on the free-to-play game - study

Over half of Fortnite players surveyed for a recent study have spent real money to play the Battle Royale game.

Fortnite Battle Royale is a free-to-play game, but 69% of players have paid real money to acquire in-game items. This spans cosmetic items such as skins, emotes, gliders, and other offerings.

A study conducted by LendEDU (thanks, GI.biz) surveyed 1,000 Fortnite players who spend between six and ten hours per week playing the Battle Royale game.

Of those surveyed, LendEDU found 58.9% spent money on cosmetic outfits or characters; 18.06% purchased gliders; 13.52% spent money on harvesting tools; and 9.52% used funds to purchase emotes and dance moves.

The study concluded the average amount spent by players totaled $84.67, and 36.78% said this game is the first time they have made in-game purchases.

Furthermore, 20% of those surveyed were unaware the items did not provide an in-game advantage despite a clear notice from Epic Games on the matter.

LendEDU reports 25.3% of players also pay for Twitch Prime, which has handed subscribers at least two skin packs for the game.

41.11% of the Fortnite players polled paid $4.99 per month for Twitch; 43.48% paid $9.99 per month; and 15.41% paid $24.99.

SuperData reported yesterday Fortnite made $318 million across all platforms in May, up 7% compared to $296 million made in April. The Battle Royale game became the largest free-to-play console game of all time in March with $223 million in revenue.

Fortnite Season 5 starts in July, and the long teased Playground LTM mode is coming today.
