Fortnite dropping Early Access label, Save the World no longer going free-to-play

Fortnite is leaving Early Access.

Epic Games is finally taking Fortnite out of Early Access. The label was a holdover from the game's launch in 2017, and it was mostly relevant for the game's PvE mode Save the World. This week, the game will no longer say Early Access anywhere.

Initially, the plan was for Save the World to become free-to-play - like Battle Royale - when it graduates out of Early Access. This is no longer happening. You'll still need to pay in order to access the PvE mode.

In a development update, Epic also said it's removing the Early Access label from the Creative game modes. Development of new Save the World content will also slow down going forward. More interestingly, Epic said future BR cosmetics may not always be supported in Save the World.

Everything you currently own will work across both, but skins and such released down the line will only be functional in Battle Royale. The developer said that, when that cutoff occurs, it will let players know.

If you own any of the Founder's Packs, your edition will be upgraded to the next level. You'll also unlock all the rewards in the upgraded pack for free. Owners of the Ultimate Edition will get 8,000 V-Bucks, and the new Metal Team Leader Pack.

Those looking to jump into Save the World will be able to purchase one of several new Save the World packs. The first of which, available on Thursday, is the Metal Team Leader Pack. It costs $20 and comes with a new hero and associated challenges, the Papa Bear weapon schematic, and the Warning Bow Back Bling.

The Save the World launch will also see the introduction of Ventures, a season-long excursion with unique modifiers in a specific, seasonal zone. This part-Battle Pass brings with it a shift to an annual seasonal schedule for the mode. In other words, it'll run on a different schedule from Battle Royale.
