Fortnite beats PUBG to become Twitch's most streamed, most watched game

The popularity of Fortnite is no secret at this point, and this is well reflected in the game's Twitch viewership data.

Before Fortnite came along, PUBG was the talk of the town. The game dominated Twitch, consistently bringing in more viewers than even the biggest long-standing Twitch games like League of Legends and Dota 2.

Now, it appears there's a new king. Fortnite, PUBG's main competitor, has now dethroned PUBG to become the most streamed, and most watched game on Twitch. Stat trackers Sully Gnome have been tracking this rise in popularity ever since the game added a battle royale mode.

Though PUBG maintained its lead until early February, on February 9, Fortnite started pulling in more daily viewers than PUBG. Since then, PUBG began a steady decline in viewership, and Fortnite continued to soar.

Anecdotally, the vast majority of streams are of the battle royale mode, though there's no way to accurately split Save the World numbers from battle royale's. But you don't need numbers to know which part of Fortnite is the most popular.

The most recent count has Fortnite at over 152,000 viewers, compared to 67,000 for PUBG. This rise in popularity is responsible, or perhaps a result of, the increasing number of Twitch channels that play the game regularly.

Now, over 8,000 channels stream Fortnite daily compared to just 2,000 for PUBG, an uptick that started towards the end of January and continues to grow to this day.

A cross-examination of the past 30 days on Twitch reveals that Fortnite beats PUBG in almost every category. PUBG dropped to number three over the same period, but it still managed to bring in the highest peak viewers of the top three. If you narrow it down to just last 14 days, this advantage becomes a lot smaller.

This is in large part because of PUBG's association with some of the biggest Twitch channels. DrDisRespect, and Shroud are the two most popular, and they each get over 30,000 simultaneous viewers whenever they're streaming. PUBG is the game they stream the most, so it's not hard to see why.

This is slowly starting to change, however, and the game's overall Twitch data has shown. These days, you can clearly tell when Shroud or DrDisRespect are streaming PUBG when you see it in the top two, which doesn't happen when both are either streaming other games, or not streaming at all.

Thanks, Fortnite Intel.
