Former Epic production director almost canceled Fortnite

All of you Fortnite naysayers almost had your wish: Rod Ferguson, the former production director at Epic Games for Fortnite, says he tried to cancel the game before he left.

Fortnite used to only have its PvE base-building mode, Save the World, before the battle royale craze hit the industry with PUBG. At that time, Ferguson tells Game Informer that Fortnite "had some challenges" and that the project didn't meet his standard for something the team should continue developing.

Here's what he said:

"If I stayed at Epic, I would have canceled Fortnite. Absolutely. Before I left, I tried to cancel Fortnite. When it was just Save the World, that was a project that had some challenges. As the director of production at the time, that game would not have passed my bar for something we should have continued to keep going. I'm super happy for their success. That game you love, the worldwide sensation, it would not exist had I stayed at Epic."
