Firaxis kind of explains why the Caps Lock trick works in XCOM 2

A single button press makes loading back to base a lot shorter in XCOM 2, and Firaxis sort of tells us why.

In case you missed it, pressing Caps Lock as the game loads you back to base after completing a mission in XCOM 2, reduces load times significantly.

If you tried it with your game, you will also have noticed the stutter and game freeze that happens before giving you back control. That, according to developer Firaxis, is why this trick works.

"Hitting the key, through a rube-goldberg-esque series of events, forces all outstanding load requests to be filled immediately in a single frame," the developer told Eurogamer.

"This causes a massive hitch, and potentially could crash the game. If you don't care about those adverse effects the synchronous load is faster," the post continued.

Firaxis has previously said it's looking into reports of poor performance, and plans to release patches in the future.
