Final Fantasy Tactics 2 Was Real, and Here's What it Would Have Looked Like

Maybe one day.

Final Fantasy Tactics director Yasumi Matsuno reteamed with his former Tactics developers last weekend for a livestream commentary on a playthrough of the game they all worked on. The big surprise during the stream was when Matsuno shared some scrapped plans for the shelved sequel, Final Fantasy Tactics 2.

According to Matsuno Final Fantasy Tactics 2 was at some point in the cards for Squaresoft. As Final Fantasy Tactics is considered one of the best SRPGs around this shouldn't really be a surprise. However, as Matsuno details, confusion over the game's direction led Square to shelve the project, but not before some concepts were drafted up for the game.

The sequel was going to change the game's 3D graphics to a 2D hexagonal system, which you can see in the shared concept art above. The art shift and some internal discussions on whether or not to outsource the sequel apparently contributed to the fate of Tactics 2. Although we feel this isn't the full story as Matsuno hinted at a lot more reasons as to why Tactics 2 never moved forward.

Ultimately Matsuno wound up joining his Tactics cohorts on the "Return to Ivalice" raid for Final Fantasy XIV Stormblood. You can see our review for last year's FFXIV expansion here. We also have a Final Fantasy XIV beginner's guide for new adventurers. Who knows? Maybe we'll get some kind of Tactics 2 or Ivalice revival now that these concepts are out in the wild.
