Final Fantasy 7 remake won't be built on Square's Luminous engine

Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix doesn't seem that attached to its in-house development tools.

Final Fantasy has been closely linked with Square Enix's Luminous Engine almost since the tech was first announced. The franchise has always been Square's graphical flag bearer, and the Agni demo series is set in a Final Fantasy universe, although not tied to a particular game.

Despite this association, Luminous won't be powering the Final Fantasy 7 remake.

"Final Fantasy 7 (Remake) is not planned to be made with that," Final Fantasy 15 director Hajime Tabata told Nova Crystallis at gamescom 2015.

No word on what Tetsuya Nomura and crew intend to use instead.

So far, the upcoming Final Fantasy 15 is the only game to be made with Luminous. Kingdom Hearts 3 began on Luminous but switched over to Unreal 4, and Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn was built on a game-specific engine.

Thanks, Gematsu.
