Final Fantasy 15 suffers Bloodborne-like frame-pacing issues on PS4, even worse on PS4 Pro

See how Final Fantasy 15 performs on both the original PS4 and the Pro version.

The performance of Final Fantasy 15 on PS4 and Xbox One has been a point of discussion ever since the release of the Episode Duscae demo. The game constantly struggled to hit 30fps, and many hoped the launch version will not suffer the same fate.

In its video analysis above, Digital Foundry runs the 1.02 build through a couple of frame-rate tests on PS4, as well as PS4 Pro. The latter offers two different modes, both targeting 30fps, and only one ups the resolution and visual quality.

Running the Pro version through its paces, the site identified frame-pacing being a major problem. This is a similar issue to what Bloodborne has, if you recall. The analysis reveals the issue is even more of a problem here than it was in Bloodborne, especially when playing in the High mode.

This essentially means the image will not look smooth, even if the frame-rate is keeping up. The Lite mode, which only goes up to 1080p, suffers from the same problem, but it happens less often there.

Comparing like-for-like scenes, the PS4 version actually manages to perform better the Pro's High mode, due to the lack of the frame-pacing issue noted above. That said, the PS4 Pro's Lite mode offers the most consistent performance in terms of frame times, and is currently the best way to play the game.
