Fargo: Wasteland 2 will be designed without audio limitations

Fans have raised concerns that voice acting will limit inXile's design of Wasteland 2, but Brian Fargo has some surprises in store.

RPG Codex asked Fargo how he intends to implement voice in the branching storyline, given the prohibitive costs of recording actors for multiple dialogue and story sequences.But the designer and studio head said he had other plans in mind.

"Keep in mind that we will design the game as if there was no conversation audio, so we won't even consider that as a limitation," he said.

"I don't want to give away all my surprises, but people have made an assumption that voice acting is just talking heads or a narrator," he added, implying this assumption is wrong.

"There is some very interesting audio bits I have been wanting to try for years that will really up the drama but without the design or cost impacts.

"The classic RPGs like a Fallout or a Torment had a heavy literary vibe with all the great prose and descriptions, and that is a large element that people liked. I'm not talking about stepping on every square and getting a paragraph, but there is definitely a place for good writing."

Wasteland 2 is the sequel to a classic RPG first release in 1989, which inspired Fallout and countless imitators. It has been fully funded on Kickstarter after years of publisher knockbacks.
