Fan-made Wing Commander sequel has EA's greenlight, out March 22

EA has agreed to rein in its legal eagles, allowing the squeaky rabbit that is Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn to roam freely. This analogy could use some work.

Project lead Anton, who goes by the handle Tolwyn, told Gnome's Lair that The Darkest Dawn is one of a number of tributes EA has condoned

"A big thank you has to go to our fans for their extreme patience over the long development period, as well as to Chris Roberts, Origin, and EA for their generosity in allowing Saga and other Wing Commander fan projects to be released and distributed," he said.

The sequel has been in development by a dedicated team for over ten years, and will finally release on March 22. Built on the Freespace 2 engine, it has 55 missions, 70 cinematics and 11,000 lines of dialogues voiced by 60 voice actors, amounting to nine hours of audio.

Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn's story has been carefully woven into established canon, even taking in aspects of novels and other tie-ins. The plot kicks off between Wing Commander 2 and 3, ending with the Terran-Kilrathi War. Check out the trailer below, and find out more on the project's website.

Wing Commander was a 1990's space action series famous for its cutscenes, which included live-action and loads of voice acting, still a novelty at the time. It spawned four core entries, multiple expansions and spin-offs, and a world of licensed materials. It has a cult following to this day.
