Fallout 4: How to Use the Junk Mortar

How to use the Junk Mortar in Fallout 4.

This guide will show players how to build and use the Junk Mortar in Fallout 4, a new device that was added by Bethesda with the Contraptions DLC.

All you need is a Junk Mortar and power supply, but we wanted to try and shooter a Raider from it.

When Contraptions first released, we were busy telling you how to build devices that would make life in the Commonwealth a little easier. The never-ending search for ammunition was eased with the addition of the Ammunition Plant, and making sure your settlers were ready for battle has been no problem thanks to the Weapon Forge and Armor Forge. Lately, however, we’ve been focusing more on the fun side of life in the apocalypse, like shooting Raiders out of Junk Mortars.

Junk Mortar

The beautiful thing about the Junk Mortar (Power > Miscellaneous) is that it doesn’t require any perks to be unlocked, and can be built with only 8 Steel. If you can’t find 8 Steel in the Commonwealth, you’re doing it wrong.

Build the Junk Mortar and set it wherever you’d like. You’ll then need to put a Switched Power Pylon (Power > Connectors and Switches) down to control when it fires, and a Generator - Small (Power > Generators) to give power to those two devices. When you’ve set everything up, it’s time to provide electricity to your nearly useless, yet hilarious, contraption.

Run a wire from the Generator - Small to the Switched Power Pylon, and then another one from the Switched Power Pylon to the Junk Mortar. If the Switched Power Pylon is turned on, you’ll hear the Junk Mortar try and fire. Go ahead and turn the Switched Power Pylon off for now, denying electricity to the Junk Mortar.

Operation: Shoot Raider from Junk Mortar was a success. Now, what else can we launch from it?

You now have a fully functional Junk Mortar. You need to fill it with… whatever you’d like, and then turn the Switched Power Pylon back on to cause it to fire. This, of course, is a very simple configuration. You could, for example, use the Explosives Mill, and a series of Conveyor Belts to feed the Junk Mortar with something that explodes. The possibilities are endless.

We didn’t get too crazy with our build, but we are happy to report that we successfully captured and shot a Raider out of our very own Junk Mortar.
