ESA report: 59% of US'ers play games, females 18+ represent 36% of gamers

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has released a report which stated that over 50% of US households believe video games can bring families together, resulting in quality time together.

The report titled "Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Games Industry" also found that 68% of parents with children under 18 feel games provide mental stimulation and education.

"Parents across America recognize the widespread benefits of video games, including education, mental stimulation, and the bonding opportunities they create for families, said Michael D. Gallagher, president and ESA CEO.

"Video games are a favorite pastime enjoyed by men and women of all ages, and millions worldwide who share their game play experiences with friends and family."

Parents are also paying attention to gaming content their children play (95%), and accompany them when making a rental or purchase (91%).

Other data noted in the report notes that on average, there are two gamers in US households, and 59% of Americans play video games. The median age of gamers in the US is 32.

There is on average one dedicated console, PC or smartphone in the house, with 51% of households owning a dedicated game console. Homes generally have two consoles on average. Of those households, 58% play on consoles, 53% on phones, and 41% on other wireless devices.

  • Women age 18 or older represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (36%) than boys age 18 or younger (17%).
  • The number of female gamers age 50 and older increased by 32% from 2012 to 2013.
  • The average number of years gamers have been playing video games: 14.
  • Adult gamers have been playing for an average of 16 years, with adult men averaging 18 years and adult women averaging 13 years.
  • The average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 35.
