Ed Boon added Freddy Krueger to Mortal Kombat because he "made sense"

Ed Boon has said the inspiration for adding Freddy Krueger to Mortal Kombat as a DLC character was because NetherRealm wanted to add a famous character into the series that fit with the overall theme.

Speaking with the PS Blog, Boon said Freddy “makes sense,” and that the team also looked at other horror characters such as Jason and Michael Meyers.

“Freddy Kreuger, we felt, was the most instantly recognizable and he fits in with Mortal Kombat with his claws,” said Boon. “ It just seemed like the best fit.”

Boon went on to say the team didn’t want him to resemble actor Robert Englund so much, and didn’t even if it would be allowed or not; however, since the movies starring the scarred nightmare terrorist “were huge,” the team decided making the MK Freddy as close to the original character from the 80s as possible.

The character will make use of swipes in the game with his large claws, can send them “creepy-crawling on the ground or flying through the air,” and he can also dig into the ground and the claws will come up under his opponent. There’s “plenty of dream-related stuff,” in his introduction animation, as well as his victory stance, and his fatalities.

Freddy will be unleashed into MK August 9 for $4.99.
