Dreams devs are happy for you to remake your favourite games - but expect them to get pulled down

The developers of PS4 exclusive Dreams are happy for you to remake your favourtie video games and trailers - but expect them to be pulled down from public channels.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with VG247, Media Molecule said that recreating games and other popular entertainment is a great way to learn creation skills. But as a developer responsible for the Dreams toolset, it has to abide by intellectual property laws.

"I think it’s natural for people to start out by trying to remake things. It’s a really great way to learn: learn art, learn music, learn the tools, push the engine," Liam de Valmency, senior principle programmer for Dreams, told VG247.

"But if you’re making IP stuff, it might disappear at some point. Our general policy is that if IP owners ask us to take something down, we will."

We've seen plenty of classic games and demos remade so far in Dreams. Some, like a Star Wars X-Wing demo and Final Fantasy 7 remain online. Others, like Konami's PT demo, have been nuked from orbit.

You don't have to share you creations publicly, says de Valmency, so you can always recreate your favourite games and only pass them around between friends or a smaller community if you don't want to see your hard work vaporised.

"Players can make these things and then just sort of keep them to themselves or show them to their friends. That’s great way of doing that without risking anything being taken down," he said.
