Dragon Ball FighterZ: Characters That Might (and Should) Be Coming as DLC

Arc System Works' newest fighter started with a strong roster, but it could be better, no?

This article first appeared on USgamer, a partner publication of VG247. Some content, such as this article, has been migrated to VG247 for posterity after USgamer's closure - but it has not been edited or further vetted by the VG247 team.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is already out and players everywhere are diving in. Arc System Works has crafted a game that accessible for casual fighting fans and Dragon Ball Z lovers, while also having enough depth to keep veterans happy. It's a great foundation that can continue to be built upon.

Part of that building is filling out the 24 character roster with even more fighters. So begins a period of hopeful speculation. Who will be the next characters added to Dragon Ball FighterZ?

We need another Goku or Vegeta like we need a hole in the head.

YouTuber SergioM3 has been datamining the Dragon Ball FighterZ launch client to see if there's anything interesting to find, with the results posted in a recent video. What they found were tags for new downloadable content, in the form of additional character avatars. These avatars are used in the game's offline and online lobbies, where you wander around a recreation of classic Dragon Ball locations, mingle with other players, and decide what you're doing in the game.

While these are just avatars, currently all characters with multiple avatars are playable in-game. That means it's likely that some of these additional avatars correspond to new characters. So which characters have multiple avatars?

  • Broly
  • Bardock
  • Zamasu
  • Vegito
  • Android 17
  • Cooler

Some of this lines up with previous character rumors for Dragon Ball FighterZ, which point to non-Saiyan Goku, non-Saiyan Vegeta, Broly, and Bardock as upcoming characters. The FighterZ Pass for Dragon Ball FighterZ is going to add eight characters for the $34.99 asking price. Put the datamined and rumored lists together and you have eight characters. Will these be who we see added to the game as part of the Character Pass?

Even if they are, let's be honest, there are a number of Dragon Ball characters that should be added to Dragon Ball FighterZ. While Arc System Works did a great job of picking characters from Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, there are some notable holes. With that in mind, here are the characters that should be added Dragon Ball FighterZ as downloadable content, not counting those listed above.

Master Roshi

The man who taught Son Goku his signature Kamehameha deserves a slot on Dragon Ball FighterZ' roster. He might be old, but there's still a lot of power left in that aged frame. After fading into the background for the latter seasons of Dragon Ball Z, Master Roshi has seen a return in the Dragon Ball Z films and the current arc of Dragon Ball Super. Let Roshi have his base form as the smaller, combo heavy trickster, while also offering up his bulkier form as an install Super with a MAX Power Kamehameha as a finisher.

Videl

Dragon Ball as a whole is a bit low on when it comes to female fighters, and that's reflected in the roster of Dragon Ball FighterZ. Android 17 and Android 21 are the only playable female characters in the roster. I propose we add Videl, Mr. Satan's daughter and Gohan's wife. If Yamcha and Nappa can get bumped up to A-list status, than Videl should be able to stand tall with the rest of the crew.

I'd go with her Buu Saga look sans pigtails, though Bandai Namco could offer her pigtail and current Dragon Ball Super looks as lobby avatars.

Mr. Satan

If his daughter and best friend are in Dragon Ball FighterZ, how can we leave Mr. Satan out of the action? Surely, the World's Strongest Man and Earth's Protector is powerful enough to be a contender? I'd honestly have Mr. Satan as a Dan Hibiki-type character. No Ki Blast, but grenade-like projectiles to make up for it. No Super Dash, but with really powerful normals. Losing to a Mr. Satan player should hurt; just because he's a joke character doesn't mean that he shouldn't be viable.

Jiren

Goku Black, Hit, and Beerus are holding down the fort for the currently-airing Dragon Ball Super, but they don't have to be the only characters from that show. The latest antagonist from Dragon Ball Super's Universe Survival Saga, Jiren is the strongest man in his universe and he's currently crushing his way through the tournament. Jiren was strong enough to reflect Goku's Spirit Bomb back at him (goddamn!) and he can hold off Goku and Vegeta at their highest power levels. Fans love the guy based on his strong showing, which earns him a slot in this list.

Kefla

If Gotenks and Vegito get a shot at Dragon Ball FighterZ, I think there's another fusion character that deserves some love. Kelfa is another female fighter, and one that can stand toe-to-toe with the best the Dragon Ball universe. Kefla is the fusion between two characters: Kale and Caulifla. Both fighters are Team Universe 6, representing some of the strongest Saiyans on their Earth. Kale is the attitude and Caulifla is the sheer power; together they form one warrior that can take on Ultra Instinct Goku. I see Kefla is a strong counter fighter, like Hit but with more ranged attacks at her disposal. Plus, you can add Kefla, Kale, and Caulifla as avatars for the lobby!

Kid Goku

Look through the roster of Dragon Ball FighterZ, one big hole appears: there's no Dragon Ball representation. (Well, two big holes if you count Dragon Ball GT as canon.) So let's give a nod to where everything began and add Kid Goku as a character. Folks might be tempted to render him in a modern style like his Dragon Ball GT version, but no, he should look like he did in the original Dragon Ball manga and anime. Toriyama's old Dr. Slump style in full swing. Give him the Cloud and the staff as part of his arsenal and I think you could have a ton of fun carving a cool niche out for him. Plus, he gives Arc System Works room for more anime references!

Omega Shenron

You know what? If we're getting weird here, why not give Omega Shenron as shot as the lone Dragon Ball GT spot? It's a choice between Pan or GT's villains, but I think anything Pan can do, Videl can do better in terms of a fighting game. That leaves the choice between Baby, likely in his Vegeta form, or Shenron. Omega Shenron just feels like a better character, especially with his semi-Dabura design.

The character has gotten a good deal of play as one of the strongest characters in Dragon Ball: Xenoverse and Xenoverse 2. Omega Shenron is pure brute force and power, so give him some Super Armor so he can shrug off basic Ki Blasts and you have a fearsome boss-level fighter.

That's six fighters and one wild card that could fill out the roster of Dragon Ball FighterZ. I tried to pick characters that I felt would add something to the game's play or fill in spots that were missing in the roster. Who do you think should be added to Dragon Ball FighterZ in the future?
