Double Fine announces Hack 'N' Slash, another Amnesia Fortnight alumni

Hack 'N' Slash, on of the prototype games included in Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight 2012 bundle, is being rejigged for full release.

The title of Hack 'N' Slash is a pun - the hacking in this instance refers to the network security kind, as the game stars an elf who hacks into a computer game in search of secrets, using "exploits, trainers and cracks" in place of traditional fantasy weapons.

Eurogamer reports the puzzle action game is coming to Linux, Mac and PC in the first half of 2014 thanks to investment from the Indie Fund and friends, just like Spacebase DF-9.

"The puzzle dungeons will be designed to teach you progressively more sophisticated hacking, cheating and reverse-engineering tools. And they won't be toys. They'll actually be used to hack the running game," project lead Brandon Dillon said.

"I've always loved games with lots of secrets in them. When I first discovered a hex editor in an emulator, it dawned on me that I could be a kind of digital treasure hunter - no game could keep even its deepest secrets from me if I adventured long enough in its code and memory."

Hack 'N'Slash was the most popular prototype released to the public in Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight 2012 bundle. Since the release of Brütal Legend, its last traditionally published game, Double Fine has produced a number of games based on its annual company game jam, including Costume Quest, Stacking and Iron Brigade.
