Dishonored 2 testers coming up with ways to chain powers devs hadn't predicted

Dishonored 2 retains the same freedom you had in combining together the various in-game powers.

Like the original, Dishonored 2 relies on emergent gameplay that results from creative use of your character's powers. Although we've yet to try it out ourselves, playtesters are seemingly already having fun mixing things up.

"We love it when our powers have flexible utility," game director Harvey Smith told OXM. "We already have some startling ways that people have combined them that have shocked us. This is the emergent gameplay thing that we all love."

Emily, one of the game's two playable characters, has an ability called Domino that lets her link enemies together so she can take them out with one shot. Together with another ability that allows her to create a doppelganger, one player used this to link a doppelganger to some enemies and proceed to kill it along with them.

The developers gave another example of how powers can be combined for maximum effect. "Someone at Arkane came to me a while back with a question: ‘Should spring razormines be triggered by your doppelganger?’" recounts lead designer Dinga Bakaba.

"Usually I don’t answer those questions except to say ’why do you ask?’ And he said ‘I summoned my doppelganger and I tried to place a mine nearby because I wanted to do a trap, but I actually put the mine on the doppelganger.’ So when the enemy arrives they run after her and – bam! When they catch up, they explode in gibs."

"If it’s occurred to the player and if it’s fun, we tend to embrace it," added Bakaba.

Dishonored 2 is out November 11 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
